Signal Chain: Focusrite
The Studio Staple, and the Home Studio Standard
I can think of no better line of products to highlight in our first issue than Focusrite’s range of audio interfaces. In the last 15 years, the Focusrite name has become practically synonymous with audio interfaces. The accessibility, versatility, and quality of the Scarlett & Clarett ranges have made them an invaluable tool for so many in the recording/broadcast world. The recently released Gen 4 range come with their upgraded software, Focusrite Contol 2, a powerful tool for routing audio and controlling features such as clock source, air preamps, and monitor mixing.

Recent months have seen real debate over whether modern interface preamps are technically comparable to classic outboard preamps. Jim Lill's now-infamous comparison of a Neve 31105 against a Scarlett showed the gap in clean, high-headroom performance is smaller than the gap in price. This highlights the real quality and value of consumer-friendly interfaces such as Focusrite Scarlett…
-- but it also proved the point critics raised: standard interface preamps are built to be transparent, not characterful. That's the trade-off Focusrite has now addressed directly with the announcement of the ISA C8X Interface.
ISA C8X: RUPERT NEVE’S LEGACY, NOW VIA USB-C

Introducing the ISA C8X — Focusrite's first interface to carry the ISA name, and the first to put Lundahl transformer preamps front and centre rather than clean gain alone. Built around the Lundahl LL1538 transformer circuit originally selected by Rupert Neve in 1985, the ISA C8X blends classic analogue character with modern workflow tools, multichannel monitoring, and full digital control. It's the interface for engineers who want two channels of true ISA preamp tone integrated directly into a modern USB-C workflow with no outboard rack required. It also has 6 more of Focusrite’s standard (but excellent) mic pres on the rear, with room for expansion via ADAT.

PRODUCT PROMO OF THE WEEK
Each week, we will put a special promotion on a particular product that deserves the endorsement. The recommendation may come from a member of the Musiclab / Totally Technical
staff, or a local professional. There are only two rules:
1 – The endorser must have worked with the product on a job
2 – The product must have exceeded their expectations, or surprised them positively
I’d like to take this opportunity to shine a spotlight on the Electro-Voice RE20. The best way I can put it is that despite its legendary status, I still think the mic is a little underrated. A versatile tool for getting up close with high SPL sources while maintaining clarity and balance, thanks to its capsule and proximity-effect reducing Variable-D Technology. Vocals, brass, kick drums, amps. A swiss army knife dynamic microphone with tasteful, midrange-focused character.
